About

A home for enduring good deeds.

Baqiyah builds things for the ummah and gives them away. The test we hold every piece of work to is a single question: does it keep giving after we stop paying for it?

The name

Why Baqiyah.

The name comes from al-baqiyat as-salihat, the enduring good deeds. It is not a slogan we chose and then justified. It is the argument itself, and the easiest way to explain what this organisation is for is simply to explain its own name.

“Wealth and children are the adornment of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope.”

Qur'an 18:46

A well is sadaqah jariyah until the water table drops. A masjid is sadaqah jariyah until the roof goes. Code is sadaqah jariyah that gets cheaper to run every year and reaches the next person for free. Buruja teaches someone to pray at two in the morning in Tallinn, then teaches someone else in Toronto ten minutes later, at no extra cost.

That is what we build, and that is what your money keeps alive.

Who

Who is behind this.

Rafi Mohammad writes the code and most of the words.

Born in India, lives in Tallinn. He builds software for a living, through his own company in Estonia, and most of what he has shipped has nothing to do with any of this.

Baqiyah is the one he does for nothing. No salary, no invoices, no client work touching it. He is on the board because somebody has to sign the papers.

Farhan Mohamed Ali is a co-founder, based in Sweden.

Anonymous fundraising is a fair thing to be suspicious of. If you want to know who is asking, that is who.

The shape of it

Baqiyah is the thing. The projects are examples.

Minbar, Buruja and Salattid are not the point, and none of them is the reason this association exists. They are what it has made so far. If one of them is ever retired, Baqiyah is unaffected, and the seventh project will not need a rebrand.

What runs through all three is smaller and more specific than a mission statement. Each one delivers into a calendar the person already opens. Buruja puts a verse there. Salattid puts the prayer times there. Minbar puts Friday there.
